FAMILY MELLOTT - hereditary winemakers since 1513.
We would like to
introduce a new winery in our range of wines: the venerable French winery
"Alfonso MELLOT".
FAMILY MELLOTT - hereditary winemakers since 1513.
1.Since the 16th
century, the MELLOT family has been featured in local archives as winemakers
and wine merchants. Their continued success led King Louis XIV to appoint Cesar
MELLOT as his personal wine advisor in 1698. Thus, in the early 19th century,
Alphonse MELLOT established the family home in Sancerre, which continued to
expand from father to son.
2. According to tradition, in each generation the oldest child is named Alphonse.
3. Recently the
estate of Alphonse MELLOT passed from Alphonse the Elder (18th generation) to
his son Alphonse the Younger and daughter Emmanuel. Together, Alphonse and
Emmanuel MELLOT continued the legacy of their ancestors, and also gave the
wines of the estate their own unique character. Today they run the famous
Domaine de la Moussiere estate flagship, as well as the family plots Le Manoir,
Les Herses, Satellite, Le Paradis and (aptly named) Generation XIX. Since 2005,
they have also been working on a new site called the Domaine des Penitents,
located 35 km from Sancerre.
4. The flagship
vineyard Domaine de la Moussiere (30 hectares) is located at the top of
Sancerre in the picturesque Loire Valley in France. And it is processed
according to the principles of organic and biodynamic cultivation. Harvested by
hand and respecting the environment and exceptional terroir.
4. The
exceptional quality of the wines has resulted in DOMAINE DE LA MOUSSIERE being
officially classified as a unique category among Sancerre wines.
5. From the legendary Domaine de La Moussiere vineyard in Sancerre, where ancient vines are rooted deep in the limestone soils of Chimeridge, originate some of the greatest Sauvignon Blanc wines in the world, whose labels are decorated with the signature of Alphonse MELLOT.
5. Today, this
estate belongs to the nineteenth generation of MELLOT family winemakers, who
carefully guard the wine-making heritage that is more than 500 years old. This
estate clearly belongs to a special league, even classified as "out of
competition", which literally means "unsurpassed quality."
6. The farms in
Alphonse MELLOTt are organic and certified as biodynamic, with a team of 40
employees cultivating a total of 47 hectares of vineyards. The vines are
planted at a density of 8,000 to 10,000 vines per hectare.
7. From the vines
of the limestone-rich vineyard La Moussiere, Alphonse MELLOT produces the
flagship wine La Moussiere in reds, whites and pinks, Generation XIX in reds
and whites and the iconic Edmond cuvée. The estate also produces a 100% red
Pinot Noir called La Demoiselle from siliceous clay soils from a site called La
Demoiselle and En Grands Champs Pinot Noir on the chalky soils of Buzanse in
the upper part of La Musier.
In a word, this
is the legendary Winery with world wine !!
